The Story
It started with a missing icon.
I was working on [a home/appliance-adjacent interface] and needed something specific — [an air fryer, of all things]. Every set I searched came back with the same three things: a generic oven, a generic pot, or a beautifully drawn icon that had clearly never been tested at 16px. So I drew my own. It took an evening and it was better than anything I could have licensed.
The problem is that a set of one is useless. An icon only works in the context of its neighbors — the moment you sit a hand-drawn air fryer next to a licensed microwave, the mismatch is all you can see. So I drew the microwave. Then the dishwasher. Then I made a list of every appliance in my own home, which turned out to be [about 40], and then a list of every appliance I could think of, which turned out to be 201.
[What I didn't expect was how much I'd enjoy it.] Product design is a job of compromise — you're always trading something away. Drawing an icon isn't like that. There's a right answer sitting in the grid somewhere, and your job is to find it. Some nights I'd spend an hour moving a single line by half a pixel. That sounds tedious written down. It's the most absorbed I get all week.
